My Favorite Christmas Tradition

Over time I have gathered lots of ideas of how Christmas should look.

Many traditions from my family of origin, ideas from church, children’s books, Hallmark movies, friends, and social media.

For me, I want Christmas to be Christ centered.

My ideal Christmas would involve reading from Luke and acting out the nativity play as we sang songs about angels and mangers.

My husband has different ideas for the ideal Christmas.

Being in a mixed faith marriage requires respect, compromise, and a bunch of trial and error.

We are still figuring things out after 15 years.

We have found a tradition that works for our specific situation.

As a family, we do the 12 days of Christmas for each other.

Ideally this starts 12 days before Christmas, but most of us wait until the 11th hour.

Each family member writes 12 things they love about the other 4 family members.

It could be a special memory, a compliment, an expression of gratitude, or an inside joke.

On Christmas Eve we gather, dump the notes out of our stockings, and share these priceless gems with each other.

There are usually lots of laughs and sometimes some sweet tears of appreciation (shed by yours truly).

This is my favorite part of Christmas.

Sharing love, support, and gratitude is Christ centered in my mind.

For my other family members that have a different focus this works for them as well, a win win situation.

Instead of focusing on what doesn’t work, ask yourself the question; what will work in my situation?

Put your brain to work on what is possible and you will be amazed at what it will come up with.

I would love to help you with this process.
