Life is a 50/50 Pie

Happy Pi Day! (3/14 or 3.14—see what we did there?) In honor of this mathematical celebration, I want to share one of my favorite tools: 50/50.

Imagine your life as a pie chart. If you divided it into slices of happy moments and crappy moments, chances are it would be pretty evenly split. And guess what? That’s exactly how it’s supposed to be.

In this human experience, we’re meant to feel opposition in all things. We can’t truly appreciate the depth of joy without having felt sorrow. Without stormy days, sunny ones wouldn’t feel nearly as magical. If we never experienced sickness, would we ever stop to marvel at how amazing it feels to be healthy?

Ups and downs are part of the deal. Nothing has gone wrong when life feels hard—it’s just part of being human.

When we expect constant happiness or assume our relationships should always be smooth sailing, we set ourselves up for unnecessary disappointment. But when I remind myself that life is naturally 50/50, I don’t have to add extra negativity to the bumpy parts. I can ride the waves, knowing it’s all part of the journey.

Here’s to embracing the whole pie—every slice of it.
