Do You Like To Be Right? So Does Your Brain.

Did you know that your brain likes to be right?

When you think a thought your brain gets busy and looks for all the reasons that thought is true.

If I am thinking “it is a beautiful day”, my brain is going to scan for all the evidence that supports that thought.

I will notice the vibrant cloudless sky, the birds joyfully chirping, the gentle breeze making the verdant leaves dance, etc.

I love days like this.

I can also think the opposite thought, “today stinks”, and find lots of evidence for that as well.

My teenager was sassy, the dryer is slow, my skirt is too tight, my spouse is grouchy, etc.

Whatever I focus on I will find.

Did you know this applies to your mixed faith relationships as well?

When you are thinking “my loved one isn’t doing what they should”, your brain is going to go to work scanning for all the evidence of why that is true: they are not going to church, they drink coffee AND leave the Dunkin Donuts cup in the car, they are on their phone too much, they didn’t fill the gas tank, etc.

When I give my brain a different job it can just as easily find evidence for that as well.

For example, if I am looking for the things they are doing well, I can find tons of evidence for that: they work hard, they sent me an I love you text, they invited me to watch a movie with them, they are taking care of their responsibilities, etc.

Here is the thing, all of it is true.

My thoughts create my emotions.

I can focus on thoughts that create emotions that will connect me to my person or disconnect me from them.

It is worth looking at.
